On Saturday 12th March, thirteen people from Selsdon Baptist Church -
The organisation exists to help churches respond to the needs of disabled people within their congregations, and to consider how to reach out to those with disabilities who are outside the church. They also run various initiatives themselves to directly benefit those with disabilities.
Our trainer Tim Wood started by introducing the work of his organisation and then led us through a study on Luke 14, where Jesus tells the parable of the Great Banquet and the different responses to the invitations. He encouraged us to see that Jesus wants us to welcome into our church family those who are often excluded and overlooked by society as a whole.
Tim took us through some thoughts on the impact that disabilities can have on families as well as those who are personally affected.
We then looked at some scenarios involving disabled people and considered how a church could respond helpfully in those situations.
Tim helped us to think creatively about ways to include those with disabilities of
various kinds in the activities of the church -
We finished the session by considering specific actions we could take to improve the way we include those with disabilities in church life, recognising that although a lot of good things go on at Selsdon Baptist Church, there is more that could be done.
The church now has a copy of several useful resources from 'Through the Roof' about providing for and welcoming disabled people. These will be placed in the Pastoral Care Library in the Prayer Room, or you can ask to borrow them from Theresa Nichols or Ruth Manson.
