A message from Mike Elcome

Mike Elcome, our senior minister, retires this year. He wrote the following message in the February magazine:

Dear Friends

One of the changes I have seen over my years in ministry is a growing unwillingness in society generally to be committed.

We at Selsdon Baptist Church have a very specific way of expressing our commitment, and that is by publicly associating ourselves with the life and work of the church in becoming a church member.

So you may understand why I am saddened by the fact that, in our consumer society, people choose not to become part of the church like this.

It would be a real joy, during this last year with you, to see more people publicly admitting that Selsdon Baptist Church is their spiritual home where they want to serve and worship the Lord. And to do that by becoming part of the fellowship as a church member.

I know that some of those who worship with us find this strange. They assume that just by coming, you are a church member.

But at Selsdon Baptist Church you are not automatically a member. You have to tell us that you want to be. The process is not difficult – but it starts with you.

Please do tell me if I can help by answering any question about this.
