Maggie Potts on the Homegroups stall at the Many Hands Fair Homegroups are small groups of people from Selsdon Baptist who gather together in a home on a regular basis for fellowship, prayer and to learn. They are a key resource of the church.

Some of the key elements of homegroups are as follows:

1 Fellowship. The aim is for everyone to be comfortable in the group, and for the group to offer loving support and practical help to each other.

2. Bible and Study Material. Each group spends time studying the Bible, to understand it and see how it relates to life today. The group leaders meet occasionally to give a broad direction across the groups.

3. Discipleship. Te groups help people

in their discipleship, to nurture and grow their spiritual gifts, and to work out practical Christian living.

4. Worship and Prayer. Worship in a homegroup may mean singing, sharing in communion and praising God. Prayer may be for those in the group, their contacts, or for the projects of the group or the wider church.

5. Relating to the Community. The groups have the potential to reach those who are not yet Christians,

Yellow star - Small Groups make a difference in peoples lives by demonstrating love, by nurturing intimate relationships and by giving people the opportunity to tell their stories
Maggie Potts for instance by putting on low key social events, and by supporting each other in their daily witness.

6. Relating to the whole church. The homegroups are not isolated entities, but part of the whole church. The church as a whole may seek the views of the homegroups on specific issues. The members of the groups are committed to the building up and growth of the church. Groups may sometimes lead services.

7. Openness. The groups should always encourage new people to join either themselves or other groups.

8. Group Leadership. Some groups have a single leader, whilst others have shared leadership. The church is committed to training leaders, who are church members. There are three leaders meetings a year for feedback, and to share ideas.

9. Pastoral care. Pastoral care of the homegroup is normally given to the leader of the group, although the work can be shared within the group.
