Croydon Churches Floating Shelter
During
the winter months, on one night each week Selsdon Baptist Church
is the venues for the floating shelter, which provides a roof
and bed and hot meals for those who would otherwise be on the
street.
Each week we need two volunteers to set up the hall, two
volunteers to cook the meals, two volunteers to prepare
sandwiches, and so on.
The volunteers all agree that helping at the shelter is
tremendously enjoyable and fulfils a significant need.
The shelter provides a particularly useful service to those
being served, by providing a fixed location each week, which
helps people connect with social services and other support
organisations.
If you can help in this form of service, get in touch through
the church office.
Nightwatch
Nightwatch serves the homeless in the borough
by providing food every night of the week in the Queen's Gardens
in the centre of Croydon.
We provide them with basic clothing,
toiletries, sleeping bags, bedding and bags of food.
We also help people resettle into rooms /
flats by providing cooking utensils, cutlery, crockery etc; and
basic furniture via New Approach and the Croydon Community
Furniture Project.
We do it because we care for people who have
no homes, no jobs, few friends and a limited future in their
present condition.
Can you volunteer to help in Queen's gardens
one night a week. You could donate clean and serviceable
blankets, duvets, bedding, towels and any other items mentioned
above. For example, we hand out three or four sleeping bags a
week.
