On Saturday 16th January a crowd from across the church gathered at Greenvale Primary
School to celebrate the 3rd birthday of the Greenvale congregation. After answering
questions on a variety of subjects (inc. Sport, History, TV Adverts, 2009) the ‘Feisty
Five’ (Stan, Val, Paul, Shirley & Mim) won the competition and took home winners’
medals, chocolates and a large helium ‘3’ balloon!
It was a good evening, not least because it was marking the 3rd birthday of SBC @ Greenvale. Our prayer is that there might be many more birthday celebrations to come …
The first Kidz Klub got of to a fantastic start on Saturday 30th January with 51 children turning up for 2 hours of fun and chaos! This included children from the church and also from the local area. If next time they all bring a friend ....!
Messy Church also started for the first time on Sunday 31st January. It starts with toast or crumpets or brioche, coffee etc. The theme was God's blessing on Noah, so there were several messy activities related to the ark and rainbow, and some more contemplative activities for those averse to paint!
On the 15th November we had a joint celebration at Trinity School, with the Addington
Road congregation. There's more details here.
On 7th November a group of around 20 people from across the church gathered at St Mary’s Farleigh for our first ever Radical Living Day. Our time together was led by Rev Simon Mattholie (pictured below with his wife Kirstie), who is currently the Minister of Saffron Walden Baptist Church.

During the day we were challenged to think about what sort of adverts we were for Jesus and whether our lifestyles are attractive to those who don’t yet know the joy of having a personal relationship with God.
The day was split into three main sessions looking at spirituality, silence and obedience, with particular focuses on 2 Corinthians 3 and 1 Corinthians 13.
We looked at how Christianity is a life, and how that life has to be radical and it has to be spiritual; God shouldn’t have a slot during our day, but be involved in all of our lives. We looked at how being still and taking time to be quiet can help us commune with God, letting things settle and giving us time and room to think clearly. We could make times to do this by stopping and resting whilst the kettle boils, getting off the bus a stop early and walking, or by having a relaxing bath.
Finally, we were challenged to be more obedient to the commands of God and realise that we will find more freedom in obeying God than in conforming to our culture’s idea of freedom.

One person who came along commented: ‘What an inspirational and challenging day. Because of it I know I'm a better advert for Christ! Can't wait for the next Radical Living Away Day.’ We are hoping to arrange another Radical Living during 2010.
We all had an excellent time on 21st June at our community barbecue. The weather
was excellent, allowing the children to play on the school field, and we welcomed
new visitors from the Greenvale community.
On Saturday Alison Grestock, who is part of our Greenvale congregation, was baptised
in the sea at Littlehampton by David Mayne.
This was part of the Greenvale day-

We also had a great day out, with great weather and a good time on the beach.

The Greenvale congregation followed the 40 Days of Community initiative during May 2009. You can read more about 40 days here. Through the series, God is leading us to reach out to the community, taking advantage of our access to the school field, with a "Live Better for Less Community Day". Watch out for details!
