On Friday 4th March, Selsdon Baptist Church held its first Fairtrade Fashion Show to mark Fairtrade Fortnight! Two ethical clothing companies, Bishopston Trading Co. and Gossypium, loaned us fashion kits comprising clothes made of organic, fairtrade cotton.
The cotton pickers and farmers and the workers who made these garments are paid a proper wage and work in decent conditions.
The evening began with a thought-
Jo Lines and Stuart quizzed eight game volunteers (who were competing in the hope of winning a bar of fairtrade chocolate!) on their knowledge of fairtrade.
By this time the tension was mounting backstage, as fifteen models prepared to make their modelling débuts! Introduced by Tracey, they took to the catwalk to the cheers and applause of an appreciative audience, who particularly enjoyed the appearance of Ro, Rob and Tom – the only men – on the catwalk!
Thanks to everyone who helped or took part in the evening, including Pauline Foster and Marilyn Newland for sewing the fairtrade cotton bunting (decorated by the uniformed groups) and fairtrade backdrop respectively. A special thank you to Mel King, whose enthusiasm, skills and experience were essential to the planning and running of the event!
