2011 is a year when SBC is going to be focusing on 'Growing in God, Living the Word'. We're going to be looking at learning from the Bible, thinking about how we engage with the Bible, and taking time to make sure we're living it out as we are learning.
It's really important for us to think about how we connect what we read in the Bible with all aspects of our lives including work, family, money, relationships and so on. Our focal text for the year is:
2 Timothy 3v16-
Essential 100 is a book of 100 readings from both the Old and New Testaments, together with short notes to help reflect on the readings. Its aim is to help us understand the 'big picture' or 'grand narrative' of the Bible.
These books will be available from 9th January at the cost price of £5. We'd love
people to commit to reading the book during the year -
We're planning to run a series of 'Lifting the Lid' events during the year which will include:
On the 3rd Sunday evening of each month Mike, Diane and David are going to be running a series of Bible Studies. The first one will be on 16th January when Mike will be leading a study on Psalm 24.
It has the capacity to be an extremely exciting year. We want you to be increasingly enthused about the idea of getting to know your Bible better, and allowing that to help us be a better community of disciples living out our faith.
We would ask, finally, that you commit to praying for Selsdon Baptist Church during 2011. We really want to be growing in all the right directions, and to be focused on who God is calling us to be, and what he is calling us to do. Without prayer, any impact is going to be minimal and shallow, and we believe God has more in store for us than that.
The ministry team would be delighted to hear of other ideas.

An American online Bible search facility, using key words (e.g. Jesus, prophet, etc.) or a Bible passage (e.g. John 3:16), or topic (e.g. salvation). Uses a variety of translations and it is possible to either read or listen to audio results.
Scripture Union's online Bible reading site -
Part of the Bible Society's website, this details a particular way of reading the Bible called lectio divina. The download will explain the principle of lectio divina to you and then provide daily readings in this format.
(the link is for November -
Daily bible readings and notes.
LICC has lots of different resources to help connect the Bible with work, family life, and cultural events. As well as their articles, research and books, you can sign up to their Word for the Week, which is a really helpful contemporary reflection.
Biblefresh Resources -
Biblefresh is a group formed by lots of different organisations in order to help promote engaging with the Bible, and to provide resources for individual Christians and churches. There are lots of things available on their website, including tips on reading the Bible together in small groups, with children, and for personal bible study.
There are a number of Bible apps available; the most extensive is Olive Tree.
You can choose from a range of options depending on which version you want; some are free, others e.g. NIV will cost a small amount.
There is also a daily reading plan with the app that aims to take you through the Bible in a year.
There is an app available for download from www.youversion.com/download which will allow you to read the Bible and share verses via social networking websites. It's also possible to create your own reading plan and bookmark your favourite passages.
BIBLE SOCIETY’S ‘BIBLE A MONTH CLUB’
For many years, Selsdon Baptist Church has strongly supported Bible Society, not least through the tireless efforts of Barbara Burns.
If you appreciate your Bible, there is an easy way to make sure that you share that blessing with others.
Through the ‘Bible a Month Club’, for the small amount of only £4 each month, you can help someone else in the world to get their own Bible, maybe for the first time.
For details go to www.biblesociety.org.uk, then look for ‘support us’ and go to ‘regular giving’, where you will find all about this great ‘club’.
SUNDAY CLUB GIVING PROJECT
for the year
Sept 2011 -
Bibles for the world
only £4 each
when given through SBC’s Sunday Club
offering.
Working with the Bible Society’s “Bible a month” Club, we can give away Bibles to
the places in the world where they are most needed for only £4 a Bible -
That is a bargain!
We are encouraging our children and young people to give to this and to be excited by the opportunity of helping people have their own Bible. Without our help, many people will have no access to a Bible and have no hope of owning one for themselves.
